Guitars Over Guns

Guitars Over Guns provides after-school mentoring to at-risk youth through the art and music education and performance as an alternative to the gang recruitment, drugs and violence typically dominating their environments. We target the most vulnerable middle-schoolers, pairing them with professional musicians who use contemporary music to reach and teach these young people the skills they need to be successful, both in and out of school.

Flagship Music Program
Our Flagship music program combines mentorship with musical instruction and performance. Professional teaching artists serve as mentors in this program and work with youth over a year-long period. During this period, they develop relationships with the students to foster not only musical growth but personal development in and out of school. The various musical disciplines include rap and spoken word, singing and songwriting, keyboard, drumming, guitar, trumpet, and drums.
